depending what department the nominee is appointed various Senate subcommittees chair the hearings , then its put for a vote before the Full senate.

There are different comittees for different kinds of appointments. I.e. Senate judicial comittee. Senate armed services comittee.
Then, on their reccomendation there is a larger vote.
