I brought buddy home on Saturday he was very active for two days. I noticed his butt is dirty from him going to the bathroom but his stools are hard not soft or runny. The dirty part is not wet but pretty dry with some wet spots of this moring He is eating and drinking water but is not active now for the last two nights. His eyes are fine and nose but his ears are always down. Do I have anything to worry about or do I just need to take buddy to the vet or is there other signs I should look for before going that far. Could his dirty butt just be from changing places and new food?
Thanks,
Tina and Buddy

it is really difficult to pet a hamster for they are delicate. In fact you cannot even bathe it even if it smells.

Health

Signs of a healthy hamster:

Clean, bright eyes
Soft fur
Full, slightly-rounded body
Curious, active behavior
Eats and drinks normally
Well-formed droppings with no diarrhea
Things to watch for:

Blood in the urine
Overgrown front teeth
Bare patches in the fur
Diarrhea or wetness around the tail area (called "wet tail")
Lethargic behavior
Weight loss; not eating or drinking normally
Sneezing; discharge from the eyes, nose or mouth
If you notice any of the signs described above, please consult a Small Animal Veterinarian as soon as possible.

That should help!

Buddy may have wet tail, I had enumerous hampsters over the years and they all got it. I would take him to the vet if you don't mind spending the money. They have medicine for it.

Buddy is just adjusting to a new place. maby buddy is not used to the food. the reason his ears are down is because he is unsure of what to make of the place, buddy will be fine, just let him know there is nothing for him to be scared of. maby buy him a hamster wheel or fun house with tunnels, my hamster buie loved it, she had a hard time adjusting too. but yeah buddy just needs time

of course hes sad, how would you feel if you had 3 day old poop stuck on your butt? i had a guinea pig with the same prob. just lightly brush it off or wash his butt, or if he has longer hair carefully snip the clumps off his fur with scissors. remember to give him chewing blocks to keep his teeth from getting too long, and only give him alfalfa as a treat after meals
