If your betta is just lying on the bottom and only rising to the surface for air then he could be bored.

When you clean out his tank/bowl you can change it up for him so it gives him something new to check out. Re-arranging plants and decorations or even adding a new plant can perk them up. Also, putting a mirror next to his tank/bowl might also perk him up because most bettas love to flare at themselves.

I've found that bettas also tend to be more active when they are given more room to swim in and when the water temperature is from 75F-80F. Just like any other fish, bettas also like to have a lot of swimming room so if you have your betta in a small container, you may want to put him in a tank/bowl that's at least 2.5 gallons. I use to have my betta in a .5 gallon bowl and now he's in a heated 2.5 gallon tank and he's always active now!

you dont have to buy another tank just go to walmart or petsmart and buy a gold fish bowl and she would be happy that way she can eat and don't worry about gettin attacked! If a female that wasn’t ripe, or ready for spawning, would have entered a males tank, it’s possible that she would’ve been attacked, as non-ripe females are not tolerated within the vicinity of the nest. By not fleeing, a female indicates her readiness to spawn. Yes, some times if you are not careful when trying too breed bettas, the male will attack the female and he can injure the female, the females are much smaller than the males. A Male and a Female: In the wild, females stay clear of males, except during mating. When cohabiting in tanks, males might kill females, and are generally kept apart unless (a) they are juvenile siblings, (b) they are breeding, (c) there is a partition, or (d) the tank is large enough for the female to escape attack. Often, before breeding, breeders use such a container to allow female display without risking harm by the male. Two or more Females: Bettas are not schooling fish, but in a large tank with many hiding spaces, female bettas can cohabit. When two females share a tank, one usually bullies the other, however, four or more females will establish a hierarchy allowing peaceful co-existence, nevertheless, females living in community must be monitored for aggressive females.

bettas breathe at the top of the bowl so they go from resting at the bottom to get some air on top. i have learned to keep bettas in 2 1/2 gallon tanks where they have room to swim. if you put in a fake silk plant with leaves big enough for it to rest on it will stay off the bottom. if the plant is big enough to reach the top of the water they use the top leaves to anchor their bubble nests. it really makes your betta a lot more interesting pet.

it's quite normal for them to just sit ont he bottom when they are in vases or bowls because there's not much room and no heater. then they go to the top to breathe as people have said here, then go back down to lay there. what more can they really do in tiny cold places?

if you put a betta in a 2.5 gallon or 5gallon tank with a small filter and a heater he'll be a lot more active (and healthy).

Yes, that's totally normal. Bettas are anabantiods, that means they can and do breathe in air. They have a special organ a lot like a lung called the labrynth organ. Gouramis have them too. Normal and kinda cool

Yes, beta fish actually have lungs. They can drown. Isn't that weird? It is normal, don't worry. Sometimes they're lazy too : )

I found this:
Be sure that when owning these fish they also have space to breathe. because of the labrynth systems that they have (they dont breathe out of their gills, but out of lungs instead) they need to get a plentiful supply of fresh air. Provide "hidey holes" where this fish can retreat to.

It depends. Betta tend to like to rest on things. One may prefer the gravel, another will hide in a cave, plants... Many love plants just under the surface of the water. One of my males is always resting on plants in his tank. One of my females loves to rest on lettuce leaves in my main tank. (Often she'll chase away the fish attempting to eat them. ) They have to go to the surface to get air, or they will drown. (Yes their gills don't work.)

PS- Always resting on the bottom is a sign of illness, bad water conditions, or low temps.
