2) -1 and -8

1) 1,15 no
2,14, no
3,13 no
4,12 no
5,11 no
6,10 no
7,9 no
8, 8 no
and so on
r u sure it was a 42 becasue it might be a 48 in that case it would be 4 and 12

hopefully you get it! Good Luck!

It's not hard, hun. For #1 simply figure out the factors to 42 and see if those factors add up.

Take this from an algebra 2 student...This is easy compared to what you will be doing in the future...so enjoy it (well ok yeah its math but whatever).

OK. you can do it in this way:
#1
[((2 x 1) x (3 x 1)) x (7 x 1)] x 1= 42
[((2 + 1) + (3 +1)) + (7 + 1)] +1= 16

#2
[([(-2) x(-1)] x [(-2) x (-1)]) x(-2)] x -1 = 8 (positive)
[(-2)+ (-1)]+ [(-2) + (-1)]+[(-2) + -1] = -9(negative )

applying commutative and associative properties

....right??

#1 Impossible if you want whole numbers..... If there's math that led up to this step I'd check that. Even fairly common decimals like 3.5 or 3.75 don't work.

#2 Thats just -1 and -8 Multiply, its just 8, add, its -9

Good luck with the first one though

I can't help you with the first one but the answer to the second one i a -1 (negative one) and a -8 (negative eight)

Are you sure the first is correct and not a 17
If it is 17 then 3 and 14 work
