The professor threw the apple to Peter right at the end of the movie after they returned form Narnia... I don't remember that happening in the book though...

In his youth the professor brought a magical apple back from Narnia to heal his mother, he then planted the seed. The seed grew into a tree, but the tree was chopped down (fell down?), and its wood was used to build the wardrobe.

But, if there was another apple... perhaps there was another tree... and another link to Narnia.

I have read all of the books twice. I'm not sure I remember in the movie an apple being thrown to Peter. Wasn't the wardrobe that took them to Narnia built of wood from an apple tree. The seed that grew the tree was from an apple in Narnia. Still... I don't remember that from the movie.

I haven't read the books for over 25 years, but I know the professor was the boy in the first couple of books and had also been to Narnia. I think the apple was to symbolise that, but I really can't remember.

SPOILERS!!!!!

Meanwhile, a new tree grows from the apple Digory planted. Aslan explains that this tree will protect Narnia from the Witch: since she stole an apple from the original tree in a selfish way, its fruit is now abhorrent to her, and Narnia will thus enjoy an innocent Eden-like period. Aslan tells Digory that a stolen apple would have cured his mother, but that the day would have come later when she would have rather died in her illness. Aslan then gives Digory an apple from the tree of protection to take to his mother to save her, and sends the children and Uncle Andrew back to the Wood between the Worlds, whence they return to London. Digory gives the apple to his mother, who is healed, and buries the apple core in his back yard
