The only way to detect an earthquake is via the earth moving.

If you're referring to why certain animals freak out just before an earthquake hits, it's because they pick up on the very low frequency waves that humans can't detect. Those waves are the first to arrive, so they show up slightly before the "main event".

You don't. There is anecdotal evidence that some animals can sense the ground waves before humans can feel them...but as of yet there is no scientific basis to support that conclusion.

watch for the birds to be making a lot of noise and flocking to the biggest tree around they do this 1-24 hours before a quake

Clairvoyants can sometimes tell based on the experiences of their future and their unique ability to sense these events before they happen. Also if all of the water goess way way out to sea suddenly.

by using a siesemograph. also catfish will jump out of the water and act crazy
