it is a free kick taken quickly, with out the ref blowing his whistle, which all pro footballers are aware off these rules. admit it it was a good goal!

The player tells the ref if he wants to take the kick in his own time, or on the refs whistle. If it is on the whistle the ref holds his whistle in the air to let the defense know. If the ref moves away from the ball and does not raise his whistle the defnse should know there will be a quick kick. Lille have probably done the same thing before in a game , but it is always a shock when it happens to you.

the player taking the free kick usually decides what he wants to do. most of the time it's not so quick becuase there might be more than one guy who wants to shoot, subs, injuries, or they are complaining to the ref about the wall not being at the right distance. if the player has the ref move the wall back then usually the ref will not allow the free kick til after he whistles, probably because he isn't looking at the ball.

A "quick free kick" cannot be allowed and cannot be forbidden by the referee since it is not in the regulations. The player is the one who decides whether he/she executes it really fast, to surprise the defense, or take his/her time, to let his/her own teammates take their positions. Ryan Giggs simply didn't want to let the players in the other team regroup.

A quick free kick is used in the hopes that the ref won't see a thing because he has his back turned , that way he can't blow the whistle if the one taking the free kick or other players do something irregular. It should be called "Pass under the rug kick".

The player must ask the refferee for the quick free kick and must be at the discretion of the refferee, and he wanted it has the players gains advantage as the defending team may not be ready! Sometimes the quick free kick ends badly for the attacking team as other team players might not predict the quick free kick!

When you get a free kick you can either take it quickly or take your time to set it up. Whatever it is you have to tell the referee your decision and he will take the appropriate action.

If you want to set it up then he will arrange for the wall and everything, and it will start with his whistle. If you want to take it quickly you can do so once he has given permission, and he need not whistle for it.

It is allowed in the rules. Both teams should know this. No whistle needs to be blown. Remember the Boy Scouts motto. 'Be Prepared'
