I have a dell pc with windows xp home
I have Verizon DSL
The router I try to use is a Netgear Rangemax 240 WPNT834
I use the software that was provided but it wont work

It says it is connected but when I open up Internet Explorer it says page cannot be displayed. Keep in mind I am still connected.

All the correct lights are on for both the router and modem. I have a westell 2200 modem.

I have turned off all firewalls and antivirus. I have called both netgear and verizon. Verizon says they could only help me if I had a Linksys router. Netgear has no clue at all.

It sounds like an IP conflict. The Verizon modem uses IP 192.168.0.1 and many routers use that same IP out of the box for DHCP. I had the same problem with someone I set up on Verizon DSL. Everything showed as being connected...but I couldn't browse. I unhooked the DSL modem and then was able to connect to the router via the browser : http://192.168.0.1
Once I logged into the router, I changed the settings on the router to use 192.168.1.1 and saved the settings... All was well after that.

BTW, Verizon support is lame...they don't have a clue about anything. They don't even know what Motive Smartbridge is and it's installed from their CD. So it doesn't surprise me that they said to use a different router. Networking is not brand-dependent.

Have you tried just connecting to the modem to make sure it is a problem with the router?

If so, then throw away that CD they gave you and make sure you are hooked up properly. If this is a wireless router, first use a cable to connect then later try wireless.

Open up Internet Explorer and put in 192.168.0.1 and this should get you to the router's page. Enter the username/password given in the manual. If this does not work hold down the reset button on the router for 10 seconds and try this again.

Now you will need to find the connection type. If Verizon has you use some software that uses a username/password you probably connect with PPPOE, otherwise dynamic. Select your connection type and fill out the information.

In theory this should have you online. There are hundreds of other problems that could occur so if this doesn't work you should write back on what you tried and what type of connection you use (PPPOE or dynamic).

Are you both on wireless? It sounds like a bandwidth issue. You can try making sure your wireless router is a wireless N router, and that both of your computers have wireless N cards installed. If you're both using a wired connection, I would say to make sure you are using a good 100Mbps router, or possibly a gigabit router. Of course it could be your internet if you have a slow connection, like less than 1.5Mbps. I use cable internet with a 6Mbps and two computers on wired connection and one one computer I can download non-stop at 1Mbps while gaming on the second computer with no lag. Using 100Mbps router.

Have used a number of Netgear routers, have one running now. Have you read the instructions and followed the part about setting up your router using IE and the IP address they supply?

They have good e-mail support, register your router and set up a support account.

If you can't get the router to work, go back to a direct modem hook up so you can get support, but you should get 30 or 90 days of phone support for a new router. They walked me though my very first setup.

Try power cycling the router and the modem. This usually solves the problem. To power cycle unplug the router and the modem from their power source if you look on your router there should be a reset button, do that. Then hook both back up and see if you are up and running. GL.
