Usually isn't it metal that rusts? And last I heard, there weren't any metal tampons on the market? They just aren't absorbent enough.

Yes, especially those ones made out of steel wool. And if you leave them out in the rain like your bike. Or on your bike... However, keep them warm and dry and occasionally apply a coat of paint or some grout and they will serve you well for years. It's the least you can do for your hard-working tampons. Take it from someone who knows.
