Atomic number states the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. Atomic mass, or atomic weight refers to the combined number of protons with the average of the number of nuetrons in the nucleus. The same atom usually has two or more allowed numbers of nuetrons that account for the fractional portion of the atomic weight. These differing numbers of nuetrons are called isotopes of the element.
