You either suck the air though a filter and then test the filter for chemicals or you use instruments like a laser, UV or IR beam to produce a spectral analysis of the air between the transmitter and receiver. The process is similar to analyzing the light from a star to see what elements are on the star and in the space it traveled through, except the light is going on an exact path so the analysis is for a specific area.
