98% of all milk in the U.S. comes from factory farms. In factory farms cows are artificially impregnated so they can prouce milk. When a male calf is born,he will be raised for veal(kept from walking so he develops no muscles and fed an iron anemic diet so his flesh is pale) or slaughtered. After a cow is spent, she will be killed.Cows are hooked up to milking machines three times a day. They are kept in very tight areas and are given hormones and antibiotics to produce more milk then they ever would naturally.

In a way I have to say yes that cows are mistreated for their milk use. Not in the way that they are over-milked, not well fed or kept in filthy stalls(the girl who said that is full of crap).
I live in Stephenville, Texas and we have say 75 dairys surrounding my area- including Dublin(home of Dr. Pepper), Lingleville, Bluffdale, and Huckabay areas.
The cows are kept out in a large coastal pasture or a covered paddock while they are being milked. They are fed 2-3 times a day- this includes feed, hay, and alfalfa and have plenty of water. If they weren't properly cared for then the cows would not produce good quantities of milk- or good quality. Most dairys will do two rotations of breeding- half the cows will have calves in early winter and the other half in late spring. This is so high amounts of milk are produced yearly and not just once or twice a year. The cows that are in the late 4 or 5 months of pregnancy remained untouched while the cows that have had a calf are being used for milking and are bred back to have another calf for the next part of the year- so a cow that had a calf in winter will have her next calf not that spring but the following spring....and vice versa. The cows are well fed and taken care of- they have to have their vaccinations and the dairys that are up and running and traonsport milk for human or animal consumption must have a liscence of sanitation and quality. This is to make sure the cattle is not mistreated and are milked humanely.
The only thing I really don't agree with is the way that most dairys will treat the calves- most dairies remove the calves 3 days after their birth. They are moved into little individual pins and bottle fed 2 times a day. The sad thing is a lot of them die because they are not properly looked after and if they don't die they are transported to cattle auctions where they are sold to other dairies or meat houses.

Generally no they are not. But there are cases that the farmers do not take care of the cows, keep them in filthy stalls, don't feed them enough, etc. So as sad as it is, yes, some cows are tortured for their milk, but generally they are not. Usually cows are treated a lot better when they are milking because most people know that the highest care is needed for them to produce the most amount of milk they can and the highest quality.

No, they aren't tortured. Just like all mammals, once they give birth they produce milk until the calf (or milking machine) stops "suckling". Usually dairy farmers maintain two to three "herds", pregnant non-lactating (non-milk producing), milking, and rest herds. Once a cow gives birth, the calf is separated, and the mother is then milked. After a couple of months, that cow (usually re-bred for a pregnancy the next year) is rested. Hope this helps.

no the cow is not tortured to get milk because everytime a cow gives birth to the cub she produces milk (more than enough for the cub and the owner) so the owner has to milk the cow twice a day so the cow does does not get sick, because just because she does not get milked the does not stop somming milk. A cow produces 2 Lt. a day so she has to get milked or she gets sick and dies. Also a cow has to get pregnant 1 or 2 a year in order to always have milk.

Yes in some areas of the world some of the farmers use steroids or machines to milk the cows beyond there capacilty and which could really hurt them. such cases happen when there is no check on animal abuse and this happens in most of the countries

Tortured? No, actually a cow will go into a milking shed on her own when her udder gets full. A full udder is painful. The milking process is actually fairly gentle - believe me - farmers have a huge investments in their animals for them to "torture" them.

no-cows naturally make milk after they have babies and once they have calfs then they produce milk for the rest of their lives and if you don't milk them every day then it hurts them really really really bad. that is why cows aren't tortured for milk (hopefully i will get the 10 points♥)
