I had Dell, was not satisified with it, then tried gateway, and HP. Both are better than the Dell I had. I was stressing my Dell though, using it for games and heavy software. It depends on what you want to use the laptop for, gaming, Media (movies, pictures, music, etc.), or just Word, general internet use. I would say the HP, for the price and what they offer (including customer service), it's much better than Dell. Of course this is all subjective experience.

About 2 years ago I was just about ready to buy a Dell, when I checked in with Best Buy, who instantly knew that Dell was slower and less capacity than anything they had on their floor. Needless to say I was floored to hear that! I had previously only used HP desktops and was realtively happy with those experiences. I ended up getting a GAteway laptop, which I have not outgrown in the ensuing two years. SO....check and see if your Dell is not perhaps slower and smaller than the HP.
I do agree with Akbar to check the features of each!
One other note. When I had HP computers, they were outsourcing their support to INDIA, which is fine, except that it was hard to understand the support technicians, AND they misdiagnosed a stuttering mouse as a virus and had me sweep my hard drive clean for no good reason at all.
Guess no one's perfect though!

They are both pretty similar. If you have had problems with dell than you should switch and give hp a try, otherwise i would just stay with dell.

Those are just brand names, go for what is better inside like the ram, memory, hard drive etc.
