10 gallon tank,3 neon tetras (been there for a week and a half), 1 decorative log that they can swim through, and some easter grass (recommended by pet store instead of live plants-dont know why, but Im leaving the easter grass-it worked for the platty's last time) for the fry to hide in. I understand they lay eggs. If I put the easter grass INSIDE the log..will they lay the eggs in there? Or should I just leave the clump of grass floating about as usual? When will they breed? What should I expect. I have 3-didn't plan on breeding..but Im pretty sure its gonna happen

OK... basically yes you can breed your neon's. It's not real easy though. The main thing to breeding neon's is that they have to have certain water conditions. They must have very soft water (0-4Kh) and quite acidic water (Ph 6.2-6.0) Other than that you need to feed them well and feed them a variety of foods. it will be much better if you add 2-3 more neons, just to be sure you have at least one male and at least one female. You might have that now, but you need to be sure.

Next after you get the water right you have to have the right decor on the tank. They won't breed in a log because they scatter their eggs in plants. The Easter grass might work ok, but there is better things you can do. A real good way is to buy some yard and make a few spawning mops. Take your yarn and wrap it around a book about 20 times. Start at the top of the book and go long ways around until you stop back where you started. Don't pull it tight, just wrap. Next cut the yard at the top and tie a small extra piece at the bottom, opposite of where you started and stopped. Now cut the yarn back at the top. Now you have a spawning mop. Boil the mops for a few minutes to get them soft and tie them to peices of clean styrofoam cup so they will float and hang down into the tank. Try to make them about as long as the tank is tall, just off the bottom. The neons will swim through it and scatter their eggs in there.

When the babies hatch they are super small. You ca't just feed them flake food, you need speciel live foods like vineagr eels or microworms. You can grow these at home buy getting a starter culture off the web. Just google those two names and you will find them. It's really cheap and easy to do.

Google breeding neons to get even more info. You can do it, it just takes lots of patience and planning.

Best of luck!

They can definitely breed with only three. I have had it happen to me before! Here is information on how and what you will need, Neon tetras are the most popular and most beautiful fish in the United States. They deserve specail treatment in the community tank. But breeding them aren't easy. Thus is why they aren't commercaily bred in the U.S. I'll go step by step on how to breed neon tetras.
---
equipment needed.
-
10 gallon aqaurium
baby neon food;live brine
rain water (if possible)
---
Requirements
-
water at 75 to 78°f for spawning
7.0 ph level
still water before spawning
no gravel; expecially sand
no snails, for they eat eggs
foilage (meaning plants)
-

The breeding tank should be clean of everyhing except a single foliage (plant). Some aquarist think it's ok to keep snails in the breeding tank. This is not true. Snails are scavenders. They eat eggs. Before putting the parents in the breeding tank, the water should be stertilized by boiling for twenty minutes. This will kill any bacteria in the water (stertilizes). The pH should be as close as you can get to 7.0. The water temputer should be 75-78°f for the spawing. Rain water would be the best for this is you can gather it. Once you choose the male and female put the into the breeding tank. Female being round in comparison to the slim male. Refer to Fish Facts for help. Use a dim light or cover the aquarium with a sheet to dim the sun's light. If your lucky, they'll start breeding the next morning. The eggs are about the size of a grain of sand and practically invisable. This is why you can't have gravel or sand. The eggs fall at random and will be lost if fallen on any gravel. Once the spawning is over and the eggs are laid, the female should be removed first for she will eat them. The male will chase here around the yank to prevent this. Have plenty of brine shrimp ready for the offspring will hatch the next day or in 36 hours.

Your fish will be dead within a year if you leave that easter grass in there.

Go to ebay. Get a small clump of java moss. Your fish will thank you. And your chances of a succcessful spawn are very low, with only 3 fish.

Your neons will never breed. You only have 3. They are schooling fish and without 6 or more of hteir kind, they will not be comfortable enough to breed.

Also tetras are pretty hard to breed...so it will probably not happen anyways
