Not a token, token attempting counterfiet was illegal, tokens are not indian head pennies. Thanks for doubting what I just wrote and not answering the question. Thats what this place is for right?
The penny has silver either on it or completely silver. Hence the question. No real answer? Do not bother answering with an attempt to doubt questions integrity with "probably". Worse than a forum here sometimes...

Please ignore the idiot above. 47 years and he thinks he knows it all. Counting change at the toll booth doesn't count.

There is a known 1862 1c struck on a 3c silver planchet (and there are other years that have been struck on and over barber dimes as well). There are also Judd patterns of indian heads struck with the regular dies in silver, just not one in 1862 (that I know of, unlike the guy above, I can accept that I might be wrong)

As for the "penny" issue, according to websters, a penny is:
a coin, the 100th part of the dollars of various nations, as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States

Granted it started out in another country, but please buy some a dictionary for your large library.

As gofetch29 said it is probably a token of some sort. The reason for the tokens is that precious and semi-precious metals were being horded due to the war. So it is probably not silver either.

If you don't like it here, then keep your questions to yourself. Most people don't give enough info to answer a question, you being one of them. As for the answer, it is NO! the U.S. mints did not make, strike or issue in any manner shape or form, a silver 1862 cent. We use cents in this country not pennies. For pennies go to England. Sorry, I almost sound as obnoxious as you, I apologize.
