The question you asked was when PUBLIC executions were abolished in Great Britain.Gladstone was the MP who advocated the abolition of the death penalty in 1840.In March 1866 a bill to stop public executions was finally received and passed into law in 1868.It was in May of 1869 that public executions were totally abolished.
You are correct that Ruth Ellis was the last female to be hanged but that was not a public execution.

Not sure about public executions but as you say, Ruth Ellis was the last woman to be executed 13 July 1955. On 13 August 1964 two men, Peter Allen and John Walby, were hanged at the same time but at different prisons. Other Brits have been hung abroad since then but that was by the law of the land where they committed their crimes. In the British Iles death sentences have been given out but commuted to a life sentence, it was as late as 1999 that the Home Secretary actually signed the papers to abolish the death sentance here.
