Staple the noun could mean an essential part of a food supply. For example: "Rye bread was a staple to the people of the village".

Another use of the word staple as a noun talks about the metal fastener used for paperwork. As in: "We needed staples for the stapler"

Akin to that usage, would be the verb "to staple" meaning to fasten papers together. As in : After completing the report, she printed it out on paper and stapled all the pages.
