If I win the lottery, which may happen, then I would like to fulfill my lifelong ambition of being a pirate. What I would like to know is what the prospects are for pirates in this day and age? How much to outfit and crew a ship? How harsh is the law? And what sort of returns can I expect?

I'd be grateful for any factual answers and in return I promise not to pillage your settlements.

For starters, no one carries treasure like they did back then. You might plunder ships carrying cargo but nothing like gold bullion and such. If I'm not mistaken there are international laws against piracy- it's basically considered the same as hijacking a plane or stealing a car or burglary, only I imagine it's on a grander scale. If the prospects were any good don't you think more people would do it? Besides, nowadays you have a very advanced Navy and Coast Guard to deal with who have weapons that can utterly destroy your ship quickly and with deadly accuracy. I suggest you give Jimmy Buffet's song, "A Pirate's Look at Forty", a listen...
