We would like to get a rabbit(s). I would rather just get one, but do they benefit from 'company' or are they happy on their own? And if you think 2, is it best to get 2 girls or 2 boys? Thank you.

Don't get 2 males! They will fight each other and hurt themselves if you let them be around each other. If you get 1 male and 1 female then keep them separate and you will not have to worry about them reproducing. I'm not sure how females are if you put them in the same area though. But rabbits are happy even if they only have you to play with. I adopted 2 stray rabbits (both were pet breeds that someone had let loose), but before them I had just one rabbit for a long time because when my mom's died we just didn't get another one. He's one of the happiest rabbits I have ever met, but of course he is also spoiled a lot lol. Anyhow, point being, he was none the worse for wear being the only rabbit I had, he was loved and that is all that matters.

First of all, NEVER get two males, they will almost certainly fight (sometimes even if you do get them 'fixed').
Please never get a rabbit and a guinea pig, this is so out dated i'm not sure why it has been recommended. I had a mixed pair when i was young and the guinea pig regularly attacked the rabbit and at one point the rabbit very nearly died from internal damage.
It all depend on how much time you plan on spending with your rabbit. I fit is going to be left outside or just in its hutch alot, then get two. But the best thing is if you are going to handle and play with the rabbit ALOT then one is absolutely fine.
Remember rabbits can be very easily litter trained like cats, so why not take it inside lots so it gets more fuss, and enrichment.

P.S. the loop ears tend to be a little bit more friendly in my experience.

We have found it better to bond 2 rabbits together. Two spayed females will NOT bond because of territory issues. Two males have been bonded, but that is not recommended either because one may attack the other. The best pair is for a female and a male (both spayed/neutered) to be bonded together. We have had 2 bonded pairs with a female and a male. We have an older male single bunny who seems more lonely and wants more human attention than the bonded pair we have.

Please please please don't get two males, they will fight endlessly, and can inflict serious injury,if its rabbits you want get two females.Another suggestion is get a rabbit and a guinea pig, they wont fight,no matter what sex they are,if you choose to do this, you need to get babies or youngsters, don't just put a pig in with an adult rabbit, they can be seriously injured if the rabbit bucks, but 2 babies will grow up best o mates,i had a guinea pig and a rabbit together for 4 years, when the rabbit died, the pig gave up literally two weeks later, they form a special bond.as they are not seen as competition for females, and there is no hierarchy as they are different species.

I would go for two for company, of the same sex. 2males or 2 females together would be all right most of the time, but like humans they can get wound with each other and/or fall out totally. Have you thought about 1 rabbit and 1 guinea-pig together. There slightly different characters often compliment each other. I find geinea-pigs better to train.

Barbara S is wrong!!! Rabbit DONT go through heat! and DONT get 2 boys. they r tend to fighting more then females. inless they r pregant.

i'd get to female and i would get them toseparte cage that r side by side or a cage that it split. so they can have their own space but still see each other. that's all they need and then a chance to play with each other outside their cages but with supervision. they may still fight.

Any vet will tell you that rabbits can be one of the nastiest pets to own. We had two and I wouldn't have another one. As they get older they don't bother to 'clean' their bottoms. You know what happens then? Flies lay eggs on them and the rabbits get eaten away by maggots. I kept the hutch ours were in scrupulously clean, but it still happened.
