If the lunar cycle is one period of oscilation relative from earth observed new moon to new moon. the number of days is 29.5 days(its called a lunar month). However because the stationary orbit of the moon relative to the earth is an ellipes tilted five degrees to the ecliptic viewed from the top( a star) would appear as a circle. Therefore the period of the moon relative to the stars would be shorter. The period is 27.3 days and is called a side real month. There are 13.35 side real month in a sidereal year.
