Hello,
Being 12 years old, it's very likely that the small red spots you see in your underclothing is a sign that you are entering puberty. For many young girls, the beginning of puberty does NOT have regular "periods" like grown women experience. Very often, a young lady may have small spots of blood for a day or so, then nothing like that again for several months. Or, it could come back in a few days. Only as you mature more will your menstrual cycles become whatever is going to be "normal" for you. There is not a single cycle that all women follow. Many women will have very irregular periods for the entire time they experience periods, but most women will have an individual "routine" for their cycles, which you will come to know better than anyone else in your life.
I would suggest that if you feel you can talk to your mom, an older sister or cousin, an aunt, grandmother, an older friend, a teacher or any woman you trust a lot, discuss this with her. This could help answer a lot of your questions and ease any fear or worry you may have. If you don't feel you have anyone you can talk to about this, you should ask someone to make an appointment with your pediatrician or family doctor for an exam. This doesn't have to include a vaginal exam like grown women have, maybe just a general physical exam to check you out to make sure you're OK.
Now, there are some other things to consider beyond these small red spots being signs of your period. If you masturbate (and most people do, boys and girls, men and women), you could scratch or gouge yourself, which could make you pass small amounts of blood. If you have any sort of bladder or vaginal infection, you could be having a discharge from the infected area, which could be or look like blood. If you have been sexually active (or even more importantly, if you have been sexually abused or molested), it is very important that you talk to someone, including a doctor or nurse. You're probably mature enough to know that unprotected sex can result in pregnancy or in you getting a sexually transmitted illness. Both can present with vaginal bleeding or discharge, and at 12,both could be potentially dangerous for you.
Good luck my dear, and take care of your body. It sounds like you're growing up very normally, but just be careful and listen to what your body tells you. If you don't understand it, or have questions, please please talk to someone (or even to an Internet search, like you did here for more information).

It very well could be. 12 is the average age for a young girl to start her period. Can you talk to your mom, grandma, or sister about this?

It sounds like it is your period, but the best person to ask is either your mom or if you have sisters that are older they can help to. if you don't have either you can ask someone at school like the nurse. or even a female teacher you can ask things like this.

When you pee, is the toilet paper red (even a little)? If so, then your period has probably started. But if there's no red on the toilet paper then you could be bleeding a little from your butt. Sorry if that's gross, but it happens.
