because its always so awkward when you have a waiter standing over you and I'm never satisfied with the amount of pepper I receive. I always feel to say when far short of the time I have adiquate pepper.

Restaurants don't want their customers to have to grind their own pepper, but I know what you mean. You don't want the waiters hand to fall off. Also, it would be more cost for the restaurant and some customers would take them home. Restaurants think this makes their restaurant more formal to offer fresh ground pepper and cheese.

Some restaurants do. But, it's a sort of "classy" adddition to bring around a grinder. You should not feel funny to ask the waitstaff to put on as much pepper as you want. that's what they are there for. And don't feel funny to ask them to come back with the grinder if you want more pepper. You are paying for the meal.

The restaurant will tend to lose money if people stole the pepper grinders from the table and most people tend to use a lot of pepper on their foods since they enjoy hot stuff on their food instead of the regular flavor of the food(s).

I agree with you.
However, some restaurants feel it's stylist
to have a waiter trot around with a pepper
grinder.
Touch Of Class, eh?

I was a waitress all through college. And unfortunately customers will steal everything that is not nailed down. The cheap s&p shakers are usually safe. It's a shame really.

because people will still them. Thats why McDonald's and Burger King don't even have pepper shakers anymore (they usually have the paper tube things)
