A softener works by ion exchange - you trade dissolved hard mineral ions such as calcium, magnesium, ferrous iron, and dissolved manganese for a soft mineral ion, either sodium or potassium.

A purifier uses reverse osmosis to clean the water by forcing water through a membrane that has very small pores in it. The membrane pores are so small that they only allow the water through (and some volatile compounds). Usually the post membrane water is stored in a tank until you use it and it will pass through a carbon filter to remove volatiles and improve taste just before you use it.

In most cases, you will need to soften the water before it enters a purifier because reverse osmosis membranes get clogged by calcium and dissolved iron so if your mom wants a purifier, I would suggest the softener too.

Softeners make the water less abrasive and purifiers filter the water out. I go to college in a town where the water has failed inspection the past 4 years. The water is absolutely gross so I went through this thing before and bought filters. I have a Brita pitcher and I love it and my girlfriend has a Pur water purifier on her sink tap and it works very nicely as well. So as far as brands, either is great, its just a matter of what type of filter to buy.

Water softener extracts minerals from the water, so you use less soap, detergent and hair conditioner.
A softener does not reduce the disinfectant quality of the water.
A water purifier such as a reverse osmosis unit will remove all impurities- mineral and bacterial from the water, increasing the safety of drinking the water

Detergents are UNAFFECTED by water hardness and minerals in the water.

A water softner removes the calcium and replaces it with sodium or common salt. Careful, if you have heart problems dont go drinking water thats gone thru a softner.

A purifier uses REVERSE OSMOSIS Filter and removes the organic particulate from water. It cannot remove minerals such as calcium or iron. It can also have a carbon filter in it to improve the taste.
