I'm going to college soon and need help deciding if I should get a PHD. I can handle the work but I don't want to be in school for so long. Is it possible to get a nice decent paying job with just a MS degree?

It really depends on what field you're in. Some are just fine with a masters. Other fields really require you to get a PhD before you really get anywhere.

I think all you need is a MS degree, anything more will be just for bragging rights. Anyways, as others have already stated, learning is a life long experience. The day you stop learning is the day you fall behind. Globalization is near and you will be competing with some of the best minds in the world, and remember, they are much hungrier than you are and have endured much more pain than you have. So if I were you, get started on you MS and then specialized yourself in something and always find ways to improve yourself. ALWAYS!

Get a PhD if you want to be a part of a think tank but if it's just for a job, MS will do just fine. Degree is just to show that you know a little something about the job you are applying for, experience and creativity is what keep you moving ahead.

yes, but it's not as easy as it used to be. it will mostly depend upon your field of study. for example, if you want to be a researcher, a MS degree isn't going to do you any more good than a BS. on the other hand, if you are planning to be in education (childhood education, that is), then an MS will certainly open more doors for you and lead to better pay than a BS. it would then depend upon the school system whether it is very much more beneficial to go all the way for a PhD. in dallas when my mother was teaching, an educator with a PhD could make almost as much as an entry level principal, whereas an educator with an MS made only moderately more than an educator with a BS.

no matter what your field of study, an MS doesn't carry the clout it used to carry.

Of course you can nice decent paying jobs with BS or MS. I would recommend for PhD degree only if you are interested in teaching or research positions after your graduation. Remember, after you have a phd degree the number of companies and jobs get very much restricted to your PhD research area.

Let me give some good advice. See if you can get into a PhD program that will grant a Masters if you complete a certain amount of credits. A friend of mine went for a Chemistry PhD and decided after 3 years he couldn't do it anymore. based on his admissions agreement, they gave him a Masters and let him walk away.

You can get a very nicely paying job with a Masters. Believe it or not, you may be overqualified for a lot of jobs if you get the PhD.
