In reasoning and argument mapping, a counterargument, also known as a rebuttal is an objection to an objection. A counterargument can be used to rebutt an objection to a premise, a main contention or a lemma.

A counterargument might seek to cast doubt on the truth of one or more of the first argument's premises, or to show that the first argument's contention does not follow from its premises in a valid manner, or the counterargument might pay little attention to the premises and inference structure of the first argument and simply attempt to demonstrate the truth of a conclusion incompatible with that of the first argument.

For a simpler definition a counterarguement is an argument offered in opposition to another argument. This word is a noun. It is pronounced 'kawntur`aa(r)gyumunt.

A counterarguement is a term used in court proceedings. It is when one party counters the "arguement" of the other party. One offers a point, the other party argues it and your answer to that is a counter arguement.

Hope this helps

think 'debate' where two opponents argue each side of a subject. for example, the debate may be: "should abortions be legal?" one person will take the 'yes' position and offer as good an argument as he/she can. the COUNTERARGUMENT will be the opposite, or the 'no' position of the argument. it's not always as simple as yes or no arguments, but that gives you an idea at least.
