how do you decribe a colour to someone who is blind?

if they were not always blind ( some get blind after they are born) you can describe color with things they remember
besides that describing color to someone who cant see is like describing touch to someone who cant feel

I would compare each color with something that the blind person has knowledge of either that is a thing, a feeling, a condition... I would also help him to use his imagination and try to describe how he feel a certain color would be like even if he hasn't ever been able to see. At the beginning, I would use his knowledge of black color as a a guide and would ask him how would he imagine the complete opposite of what he sees would look like. Then, I would probably make to him questions like: The sea is blue. How do you feel when you are in the water? or the Sun is yellow. How and what do you feel when you are exposed to it and things like that...

I believe that since blind people are unable to see, they have learned to use their other senses in more complicated and diverse ways. So, describing colors with characteristics that other senses can perceive like warm, calm, smooth should be very helpful to make them acquire a rough understanding of colors.

Warm, cool, loud, soft, soothing, calming, exciting. I would equate them with the effects that they have on the emotions and the mind. Pink with love and softness. Blue with water and sadness. Green with soothing. Red with exciting or urgent or stop. Yellow with springtime and the sun. Black with blindness (! not a joke...). White with purity and goodness.

The only way that I can think is to compare it to another sense, like, blue is cold and red is hot.

hmm... wel, do blind people see orange when they look toward the sun under their eyelids? if so, u can find other ways to project those colors, i guess...
