I have a Speedstream 5200 modem and a D-Link router. Whenever I link the D-link directly to the modem my wireless connection works but not my connection directly to the computer. When I link the modem directly to my computer, I have no connection. My USB from my modem to the computer doesn't appear to be working, Ethernet is connected to my D-link. I've tried linking my ethernet through the d-link but that ends up with only wireless working. Please help.

sounds like either the drivers for the one's card isn't their or it is bad....forget the first part, you are doing a direct usb connection without a card. XP should detect this. i havn't tried this yet myself, but the instructions are saying to do what you are doing. try a different port and even get a pci card. you can check the drivers for the usb by going to the system properties, select hardware and then device manager. scoll down to the bottom where the usb is listed. is there any yellow marks. if so the drivers aren't their and need to be installed. if it is, you can delete the current ones nad it will detect and reinstall the drivers for it after you reboot the system. when you use the internet wizard to set it up again, you'll select the option that say LAN. this is the type of connection you are using.

if you're trying to connect your high speed modem directly to your laptop, you might want to disable wireless first. secondly, you might run into a problem because your internet provider might be limiting your internet connection to a single MAC address and that would be the MAC address of the router and this could also be why you cannot connect.
