I'm not sure what you are thinking of, but there are Bed & Breakfasts places where people own their homes and fix them up to accomadate guests to stay there and to eat meals there. They are usually very comfy and nice.
Overseas there are Hostels, which are small and cheap.
There are also motels.

Guesting housing? In germany we stayed in a guest house..that's the only thing i can think of and people that open their homes up as bed and breakfast...
