It was written as a tribute just after the assassination of Jack Kennedy. This sound was originally written in response the the assassination of John F. Kennedy. "When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light, that split the night, and split the sound of silence" refers to the gunshot that "split the sound of silence" and struck Kennedy. "And in the naked light I saw, 10,000 people maybe more" is a reference to his funeral. Going through the rest of the song you can see all the different references to the Kennedy assassination, and the sorrow everyone shared as they all mourned in silence.

The singer is talking about finding the answers to his questions, where he has no distractions from the outside world. Try going to a remote place in the country, especially at night. Then listen. You will find that complete and utter silence, which is so rare in modern times, is actually quite noisy. Your own heartbeat and breath are likely the only sound you will hear. In fact, in the stillness your experience should be one of " silence is deafening".
If the singer finds this state "his old friend", then he is likely a
loner, preferring the loneliness of nothing, and the noise of his
own state of being.

Paul Simon was inspired to write the song after JFK was assassinated. I think it expresses how a lot of people felt at that time.

The sound of silence could be a metaphor for the consequences of inaction. or the pain of loneliness. It's really about feeling the absence of something. I like Homeward Bound.

had never thought about it. Is it about a lonely guy that only has the sounds of silence as his friend? How sad. Now I feel sorry for him.
