This argument has been going on for a while.
A classic hero is one who does the right things and generally does not break the law. He is physically and mentally strong. He is moral. Superman is an example of this; he would risk his life rather than break a promise.
An anti-hero is one that generally fights for good but does not always do it by the rules. An anti-hero might cheat or break the law to catch the bad-guy or win. They are a vigilantes and sometimes the punishment is out of proportion to the crime. Batman is one of the most well know of this type; he once killed someone for jay-walking!
The interpretation of a hero is very relative though, just as laws and morals are relative and can change over time. Many people have argued for a change in the definitions.
It has been said that a "true" hero is too goodie-two-shoes and that common people cannot sympathize with him. Anti-heroes tend to be more complex and human.
Others argue that sometimes it is morally refreshing to know for sure who the good guys are and to know that eventually they will win. It can be sad to see the antagonist make a mistake that he will regret.
It might even be necessary for the development of young minds to have a clear hero figure without too many flaws. This is one of the reasons why early education only glosses over history and does not dwell to deeply until the students get older.
Hercules, hero or anti-hero?
He completed 14 labors instead of 12 because he was told that some of the ones he did did not count; he had made a promise to complete them.
He had to DO the labors because he murdered his wife and children while in a rage.
George Washington, hero or anti-hero?
General that led to the freedom of the United States from England. First president of the US.
Famous for crossing of the Delaware River to attack the British... on Christmas morning (typically a truce day), before dawn, knowing that they would be in bed sleeping in after celebrating.

There is no characteristics that are common to all heroes.
In order to be a hero, one must preform some act of goodness, usually at great risk.
All heroes need to have some reason for doing the right thing.
Some heroes do the right thing just because it is the right thing to do.
Some heroes have personal reasons for doing the right thing.
Some do the right thing because it is their job or they are paid to (which some may argue is not a hero but an anti-hero)
In my humble opinion, The hero in a story should have some personal motivation for doing the right thing. For example, Spiderman does what he does because he feels responcible for his uncles death.
Some heroes use methods that is not heroic or pure (taking the law into his/her own hands) to accomplish their goal. (protaginist)
Hope I have helped

There are every day heroes out there. They don't even need to be a super Dr., fire fighter or police officer. Or even think about your marines, every person over seas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some people just act on the moment they think of others before themselves they are patient and understanding Loving and generous dedicate their lives to a service branch.

most heros start out unknowing, or unwilling to be a hero. The story they are in usually causes the change in them that results in them being considered heroic.
