the heatsink is 2inches square and has some sort of chrome latch that attaches the base of the heatsink to the docking module. my computer is a HP Pavilion 7920

I have been a computer Tech for several years now. This is simple to do. There is a little metal clip that you must press down on and over to unclasp it. Hope this helps

HP's are notorious for using thermal compound that makes it very hard to separate the heatsink from the processor. If it won't come off after you unlatch it, try relatching it, running the computer for 10 minutes to warm it up, then unlatching and gently twisting the heat sink back and forth to loosen it.
