Bananas grow in large clumps with a flower at the end of the stalk. The flower's covering is usually a dark maroon color, and it opens to reveal several banana shaped flowers. As with most plants, they only make fruit to reproduce. Once pollinated, the plant will make seeds in the bananas. Usually bananas are harvested before that happens, but occasionally you can find tiny brown seeds in the center of a banana fruit.

Banana leaves are frequently used to wrap various foods, then cooked or steamed, unwrapped, then the inside filling is eaten. I have had several dishes prepared with banana leaves as a wrap, but never as an edible part of the dish. I think they would be pretty tough. I would not eat the flowering stem as raw bananas are a pretty good laxative, so the rest of the plant is likely to have a similar effect.

BTW, if this is your banana tree, you should know it will only fruit once. Then it will generate little keikis, or baby plants around the base. When you see them start to grow, cut down the main trunk so the babies will grow faster so you will have more bananas the next year.

I've never seen a gray ball at the end of a banana. It might be where the fruit originally started to sprout from. Hope this isn't a pointless answer.
