It started in Pulaski, Tenessee in 1865's. It was on Christmas Eve, which is ironic, since they stand for everything Jesus Christ didn't.

In 1865, it started as a prank for a group of bored and drunk civil war vets. They began in their own neighborhoods, messing with people, but soon realized the terror they were inflicting, someone got the bright idea it could used against blacks and jews and it grew from there.
And for those who don't think it's a GLBT issue, these guys aren't exactly waving rainbow flags and count gays right along side blacks, jews, occasionally catholics, or anyone else who isn't like them.
