To-pic to pick?
Loneliness: Lost in the Wilderness
A hike with friends, getting lost, enjoying the solitude, no cell phone, desolation, night is coming, a cave, all OK, but so lonely.
Thesaurus: solitude, aloneness, alienation, aloofness, detachment, desolateness, isolation, privacy, seclusion, sequestratio, solitariness, withdrawal, desolation, misery, forlornness, abandonment, inconsolability, comfortlessness.
Peace: The Sanctuary
Entering a sanctuary, feeling the peace, seeing candles, hearing calming music, smelling flowery incense. Taking the peace with you.
Thesaurus: concord, accord, concert, concurrence, conformity, harmony, cooperation, calm, calmness, inactivity, breathing spell, lull, peacefulness, peace of mind, peac, placidity, quiescence, quiet, repose, rest, serenity, stillness, tranquillity, ease.

Eerieness: Poltergeist
A Poltergeist in the house, seeking attention. At first shifting papers, then a small bag, then books, and finally a plant pot. Having this feeling that one is not alone, never knowing when the next noise will announce the Poltergeist's presence. Finally, the Poltergeist is sent to the light and is happy, and the eerie feeling goes away.
Thesaurus: abnormal, aberrant, anomalous, bent, bizarre, deviant, queer, eccentric, freakish, odd, peculiar, strange, unorthodox, unusual, weird, unconventional,
Gloom: The Gloomy Space
Being in the basement to get potatoes. The light turns off and one is locked in, feeling this gloominess of the place, despite of some light coming in. What to do? Looking around, spider webs, mice, dust, gloom in every dark and moist corner. Finally the idea to escape through the metal covered shaft of light.
Thesaurus: somber, mournful, solemn, sad, dark, dirgelike, Cimmerian, doleful, melancholy, lugubrious, dismal, woeful, depressing.
Fear: On Top of the Cliff
Being on top of the cliff, e.g. Cape of Good Hope. The narrow path does not allow one to slip, the cliff goes down a hundred yards. What if? Friend after friend has to pass over this path to reach a plateau with awesome views.Fear for oneself to fail, fear for the others. And then back: even worse, climbing down the steep rock, 90 degrees, backward onto the narrow path, clinging to the brittle rocks, without clearly seeing where to step. Failing would mean no help possible by anyone. Down there the big ocean with playful seals.
Thesaurus:. Panic, alarm, consternation, willies, fright, horror, terror, dread, fearfulness, apprehend, dread, anticipate with horror, shrink from, cringe at, cower at.

Nice task. Much success.

For an atmosphere of loneliness/gloom i guess you could write about some girl whose parents just died and she's living in an orphanage all alone.

What about being lost in a graveyard? Make it night and gloomy. Make it windy and winter with the trees thrashing around - bare branches tearing at the clothes of the writer. Put in sounds - an owl hooting hollowly. Add feelings of being watched but you can't see anyone at all - just scary shadows.

Enjoy.

Check out http://www.ClassTopic.com They have some great topics that I've used in the past. Each topic has three good sources to get you started on the research, too.
