unless you can try out a mac to see if you like it, stick with a pc.. some people absolutely love macs, theyre great if you do a lot of multimedia tasks besides just listening to music and watching videos..
i did the same thing you are going to do four years ago and bought a dell and i have had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever.. i had to contact customer service once and they were great.. and check out tablet pcs.. they didnt have those when i bought my laptop, but i could definitely see them coming in handy.. i see a lot of people taking notes on them in class

properly its fairly perplexing to discover a laptop that less expensive which could play video games like WOW at 50 or 60 frames in line with 2d yet while your happy with 30 or 40 than identity flow with a toshiba satellite tv for pc or maybe a dell inspiron. i presently have a toshiba satellite tv for pc T135D-S1325RD and play RPG video games at a solid 40 FPS. its a solid deal for money, I definitely have a macbook professional and prefer it to dying it became a million,200 money and performs WOW at and that i did clock it sixty one FPS it rather is extra ideal than a 2,200 greenback alienware laptop even nonetheless it would not sound such as you want a mac so a toshiba could be solid you notice macs and toshiba's throughout campus and mine works rather solid yet flow to bestbuy or although and see what they have for basically 500$ something style call could be superb.

well for the best windows based computer then Sony Vaio is the best but Mac's are good also
Mac's dont get virus's/adware/spyware or crash like windows does so you wont have to worry about losing your school work if you go Mac
plus if you decide to go Mac and you dont like it, then you can always put windows on it but only if its the new models with the intel processors in it

I suggest the MacBook. I suggest it because it can't get viruses, it is light, it won't crash, and it also works with all college softwares needed.
Good Luck in college!!!!!!
