Can a back yard mechanic tackle this?

If you were indeed a backyard mechanic you would already know the answer.

but here goes.

remove drive shaft,starter, linkage, shifter, remove bolts around tranny , tranny,then remove bell housing via bolts, then drop the clutch and pressure plate.

While you are there may have to resurface fly wheel,& I would change pilot shaft bushing.

then you'll need a clutch alignment tool in order to reassemble.

install eveything in reverse oreder.
