It is possible for our eyeballs to pop out through violent sneezing so it is the body's self defence system in operation when we close our eyes.

There are two reasons, firstly when we sneeze there is yes a build up of pressure that can detach our retinas which can in extreme case cause blindness, this is VERY rare!
Secondly the optic nerve runs along the smell receptors which fire a sign to your eyes to react, that's why they sort of bulge before.
Also some bonus data, this is also why when you look at the sun you sneeze, the optical nerve transmits data to the smell receptors which gives your nose the impression that's there something in your nose, odd huh?

It is the amount of pressure that builds up when we are going to sneeze. When sneezing out the sneeze it is best to close your eyes because the pressure built up will literally cause your eyes to be sneezed out. So it is best to keep them closed.

I read it somewhere...........cant remember where......that its impossible to sneeze with your eyes open, which is extremely dangerous when one is driving - I have found!
However, think its genetic thingy, or automatic safety thing built in to us, as a sneeze induces wind force of up to 2OO miles an hour, so I am told, which if you tried not to sneeze and had your eyes open, you COULD pop your eyes out?! But hey ............ who knows.............?

because the air pressure from the sneeze would pop your eyes out
(since there is an air duct connecting your eyes ear nose and mouth)

Because if we didn't out eyes would literally pop out of our head...so the automatic response is to protect your eyes! It's true!
