The auditions are at times a freak show, people like to laugh at people who can't do things that they think they can especially sing. Also Americans love a good competition, Americans watch sports everyday, we argue about whose best at this or that, we love arguments we love competitions. And anything that gets major sponsorship gets even more respect. I also found that a lot of older people like it just as much if not more than younger people do. Besides what else is there on tv when american idol is that is even close to entertaining? I think the lack of other quality shows is another thing that keeps it the most watched as well.

I think American Idol is the most watched show for one reason only, Simon. I don’t think most people watch it for the so called “budding” new talents since as evident from the music industry today, anyone be a music artist. In addition, most people go on the show to get noticed which includes intentionally displaying an utter lack of vocal ability. Thus, most people watch the show to hear Simon’s comments and of course the contestant’s reactions to those comments.

People love drama. It's awesome seeing a new star being born. Shows like dancing with the stars don't get famous because the people already are stars. People love the fact that they get to be involved with picking the star that they like. Sometimes, it's just down right funny! Espically the auditons. They love the cat fights, the entertainment, the crying, the comedy, the mean Simon Cowell, (and how Ryan Seacrest makes fun of him), and people just love music! They like to watch nobody's become stars and how excited they get. The drama is kind of sad when they work so hard and get voted off the show. I don't think any other show on television has this much entertainment.

Because everyone loves to see a rags-to-riches story. And to imagine themselves as the new Idol.

Plus, the bad auditions are like a car wreck---you just get mesmerized!
