Character/personality of the girls
"The Third Summer of the Sisterhood"
Highschool is over and another summer comes with wonders.
Four girls with different personalities.( Tibby,Carmen,Lena, and Bridget ) They first found the pants in the first summer they were going to be apart.(Two summers ago)
The pants fit perfectly on each person even they were all different shapes and sizes, and they think the pants are magical to them. They wear the pants only in the summer because they are extra powerful. This summer is very special to them because it's their last summer together before their off to college.
Carmen hates changes. She didn't like when she went over her dad's place and how much he changed a lot, because of a new family. And now she didn't like the news when she found out her mom was pregnant. Carmen's dream was to go to Williams for college but then changed her mind to stay for a while and apply for a different college. She wanted to stay and be part of the baby's life.Carmen voulnteer to take care of Lena's grandmother,Valia. Later she meets a special guy name Win and how they fall for each other. Her character in this book changes. She became "Good Carmen".
Tibby stayed home for the summer and worked at Pavillon Theater part time. She's into film making and she has younger siblings, Katherine and Nicky. Katherine jumps out of Tibby's window and fractured her skull.Tibby blames for herself because that wouldn't happen if her window wasn't open.Brian asks her to the senior party but then their friendship changes and how she didn't like him that way. She doubts that he likes her and that the only reason why Brian comes over is to see Katherine because of her injury. But, Carmen says that he likes her and that he doesn't come to see Katherine, he comes to see her.Tibby is a huge help with Carmen's mom,Christina. When Christina delivered her baby boy, Tibby was by her side and to comfort her when Carmen or Christina's husband, David, wasn't there.
Lena's character seems more gentle. Her passion is to draw and go to art school. But then Mr.Kaligaris, Lena's dad, got angry when he saw Lena drawing a nude man model at a program she was taking. He didn't want to pay for her. Annik, the instructor of the program that Lena took, encouraged Lena to work on something that can get her a scholarship. So, Lena drew sketches of her family members and learn from them of their expressions. She turns in her drawings to see if they say "yes" or "no".
Bridget goes to soccer camp this summer and she coaches. She sees guy that she fell for two summers ago, Eric. Bridget finds out too that he was her partner for the activities. She tries to be his friend because Eric has a girlfriend and didn't want to be in the way. Then a 14 year old boy at camp liked her and wanted to be with her. Just when that happened, she understood why Eric couldn't be with her before.
After spending two summers with Tibby, Lena, Bridget, and Carmen via the first two books in the series, I've grown to care about these characters. In this book/summer, a lot of things happened to them, good/bad.
Tibby's story line is usually most compelling, but this time it took a back seat to (surprise!) Carmen's story, which I'll get to later. Tibby getting over the trauma of an accident her sister has and adapting to her changing relationship with Brian was certainly the story I felt was easiest to relate to, but Brashares didn't seem to want to spend that much time on Tibby this time around.
Lena's story is also shortchanged too, but for good reason. Not a lot happens to her. What DOES happen to her is monumental for the character, but in terms of Lena taking up page space... she just doesn't. For the most part, her sections of the book consisted of her drawing the faces of her family and others. It worked well, but I wouldn't have minded another subplot.
Bridget is back at soccer camp. Thank God there was hardly anything written about soccer. Her story line wasn't as interesting as her part in the second book, but it made sense for her character and was, in a way, beautiful. She has developed most out of all the characters.
Carmen, to me, has always been the most unlikable. She's rash, sometimes mean, and places blame everywhere but in herself. And this time, she manages to have the best story line in the book. And more subplots then you can juggle. Her mom's pregnant. She has a crush on a guy who she thinks only likes the "good" side of her. She tries juggling her good/bad side. And finally, she's hired to take care of Lena's grandmother. I feel this subplot should have been given to Lena, but it did turn out well.
-----
Ann Brashares has become a great writer . She knows just how much to give, and just how much to hold back. All the points where you're supposed to smile/cry/laugh/gasp, you do. The dialogue is realistic, and the narrative is nearly flawless. This book was a great, nearly perfect, read. However, I hope that all the story lines aren't consumed by Carmen again next time.
