It's probably easiest to describe each of these things by describing what they are not.
The first thing they're not is political systems. Rule by only women is a gynecocracy, not a matriarchy (though they're not exclusive - a society might have one, both, or neither). Instead matriarchies and patriarchies are social systems.
Another thing they're not is a geneological system. A system where ancestry and inheritance is determined from the mother is a matrilineality, not a matriarchy. Though most systems are patrilineal, there have been numerous instances of matrilineal systems, especially when fatherhood is questionable.
Nor are they systems of relationships. When the woman chooses the man for courting or a husband joins the wife's family, this is referred to as matrilocality, not a matriarchy. Though in many societies women seem to take a more passive role in dating, there is usually a lot of mixture in other areas of the relationship.
So what are we left with? A social power not specifically related to politics, heritance, or relationship that is exclusive to one gender or another. This is what a matriarchy or a patriarchy is. Again, there are probably a lot fewer of either of these than most people think... often when one gender is ceded control in one area, control in other areas is ceded to the other.

All successful civilizations of the past started out as patriarchal but degenerated into gynococracy or matriarchal forms. When people try to defy natural order, chaos results. Look at America today and you can see what a matriarchal society looks like in its most pernicious form. Enjoy the comedy.
