No its about your perception of basketball players and their cornrows and tatoos. Fighting in sports and the NBA has been around before 2pac ever dropped an album. The Lakers and Celtics of the 80s were involved in many fist fights between each other. Dr J punched Larry Bird several times in the face during a game while Moses Malone and Charles Barkley held him. Rudy Tomjanovich was knocked out cold by Kermit Washington in a game in 1977 and was never the same player. Future presidential canidate Bill Bradley fought future hall of famer Don Nelson during a playoff game in the 70s. The list could go on and on, but if one just looks at the facts it is obvious that fighting isn't new, the perception of players is the new part of the equation.

Disagree. Why do you assume that all these guys grow up with a "thug" mentality. Have you ever played a competetive sport before? Dont tell me you've never gotten mad when you get taunted or the ref isnt calling the fouls. I think the NBA should ban players between 5-50 games depending on the severity of the fights. And please dont live in the past of Magic Johnson, Bird, and Robinson (I cant believe you dont have Jordan on that list). The game is different now whether you like it or not.

disagree
it's not the increase of fights it's the deal made about them and the suspensions that make them seem more serious
the NBA was made weak by the commish office
there used to be fights all the time 10,20,30 years ago and so on
but back in the day you didn't even get tossed out of the game for fighting then as late as the 80's you tackled a guy and got into a big fist fight and you only got a game or 2.
In the 80's Isiah Thomas was fed up with Cartwright always hitting him in the head so he tackled him and starting just punching him like crazy (breaking his hand in the process) and their was an uproar that he got a 2 game suspension because the usual was 1 game and by getting 2 they were saying that was the worst fight of the year which they felt it wasn't
now you breath on a guy wrong you're getting a suspension
there are a lot less fights and there aren't nearly as vicious, the only thing that got worse were the penalties
if you banned guys for life for fighting guys like Bird wouldn't have had a team and his legacy would be gone because no titles for him and he might have even been banished himself for his temper

Disagree.
Tho' I do agree the NBA has to continue to act to remove the thug image.
Protect themselves? HA! Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of NBA players do NOT come from the ghettos of America. Most of them are quite middle class - prior to being in the NBA.
On penalties...
The current penalties are enough deterrent. Just ask Carmelo if he'll ever take a swing at someone again.

uhhhh no. that's a bit harsh. basketball is a competitive sport and its only natural for people to get emotional and frustrated. some people just dont know how to control their emotions, but we all make mistakes right!? the league shouldnt use banishment as a solution for those mistakes, especially if you're going to ban them for life! they will look like hypocrites and the league doesnt want to taint their image like that. besides, i feel the suspensions and fines are sufficient. look what happened to melo... not only did he suffer being suspended for 15 games, but his team did too. how would you feel if your favorite player made a mistake fighting, not once but twice, and he was banned from the nba for life? dont tell me that you'd be happy about that.

NO WAY! Accidents happen and you can't judge someone purely by something happenning the very first or second time! I think that it depends on how bad the fight actually was. That's all that I think.

disagree, in hockey as long as it's one on one and they are standing and both fighting they let it go. people who love hockey love this part of the game, give them harsh penalties but dont suspend them unless they do something crazy like attack fans or take cheap shots

Those who fight should lose a year, then be banned for life. Those who hurt fans should never be allowed to play again.
