I'm not an illegal alien. I do have a soc security number. I have heard on the news that Illegal aliens can get bank accounts, mortgages, and credit cards without a social security number. I want those privileges too. I don't understand why I have to have my social security number attached to my bank accounts (especially with Identity fraud running rampant). What do I have to do to get this privilage or is there a case for reverse discrimination here?

If you want to open an account that pays interest, you have to have a Tax I.D. number - If you are a legal U.S. resident, your tax I.D. number is your social security number - If you are an illegal U.S. resident, or a non resident who wants to open an interest bearing account in th U.S., you have to get a Tax I.D. number that is not valid for employment. Either kind of number could be used for Identity fraud.

In theory there should be no need for any kind of tax i.d. number for a non interest bearing bank account - because no interest will be reported to the government - but since 9/11 and the Patriot act, banks may require it.

Legally, NO use bank can open an account without a SSN or ITIN. In either case, hiding money from the financial aid office is FRAUD. Just above where you sign, look for the statement that "Under penalty of perjury, I swear the above information is true and complete." The wording may vary slightly, but the essence is there. Jason: The rules predate the Patriot Act by more than a decade. Why do so many people blame the Patriot act for literally EVERYTHING. Has anyone blamed the Patriot Act for Kennedy's assasination yet?

You need a social security number. Uncle Sam wants to tax you on the interest you make and to know about large deposits.

That was just a rumor going around Bank of America doing that practice. Normally, it is required for all U.S. citizens to have a social security number. you can't do that.
