Because that's the year the Mayan calendar ends. However, that does not mean they thought the world would end in 2012...they just stopped counting time. Imagine how far away 2012 must have been to the Mayans!

Well, the myth that the world is going to end in 2012 was predicted by an ancient civilization known as the Maya. Because the Mayan calendar end's suddenly on the date December 23, 2012 many people think that it may mean that the end of the world will come on that exact date. The Mayan calendar has stunned scientists with it's accurate predictions of future events. To the best of my knowledge, none of the predictions on the Mayan calendar have been proven wrong. All of the predictions have come to pass so far. But, just because the Mayan calender end's on that date dosent exactly mean that it will be the end of the world. It is just an assumption.

Everyone doesn't think the world will end in 2012. Some people do, but they are operating on the basis of the Mayan Calendar's predictions, which are as sensible as any of the other predictions that have been made.
The date that will supercede 2012 will be 2036, now that the media has been blathering about an asteroid heading for earth. The only difficulty with that as a prediction is that it's not soon enough for those who want so desperately to believe that the cataclysm must arrive in their lifetime.
Here are a few more predictions:

The Mayan calendar apparently ends on Dec 21, 2012 which 2012 just happens to be the year of the dragon according to the chinese zodiac. For those who have seen the movie "The Dark Crystal" The Great Conjunction, which could be thought of as being the equivalent of 2012, is explained by Augra, "The Great Conjunction is the end of the world...or the beginning." As for my beliefs this makes sense because the end of one thing marks the beginning of another.

That is when the mayan calender ends. some believe that since the calender ends the world will end, while others believe it will be a year of great change. Personally I think nothing will happen. I think it is just a lot of fear over nothing just like Y2K.

I never heard of the Earth ending in 2012. The asteroid is supposed to hit in 2029.

Many people are confused; they think that the end of the Mayan calendar marks the end of the world. While we may expect a bumpy ride, it does not have to spell disaster for man. Here is what some Mayans say we are in for.
The Mayan Indians regard their beliefs as both a science and a religion. Their discoveries are not done in a lab but rather by tapping into the cosmos via the mind. Through the extensive use of meditation, they are able to discover and track planetary movements as well as space anomalies such as black holes. They used this information to construct a calendar so accurate that no present day calendar can rival its accuracy. They also use this information to predict future events.
According to some Mayans, this date marks the end of the long count of their calendar; Set to end on a winter solstice (12-21-12). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned , in the Milky Way, ninety degrees relative to the black hole, at its center. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,800 years. We exit the age of Pisces and enter the age of Aquarius.
In this position, unusually violent sun spot activity will cause a pole shift. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods will run ramped. Significant loss of life will occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. In this state of higher consciousness, we will recognize that all matter, plant, animal, mineral are bound as one. This realization will mark the end of wars for a time. People will be able to connect to the essence of god (vibrating energy) like only the most enlightened can. We will have exited the forth dimension and entered the fifth dimension.
The date marks a goal to be reached. Evil forces will make every effort to keep humanity from reaching the date. These evil forces are those entrenched in the third dimension, in the Material world. They have no desire to leave this age and wish to continue exploiting and endangering all life for material gain.
Wars just prior to this date could be most devastating, with a loss of as much as 2/3 of our population anticipated. The resulting man made environmental damage could make life inhospitable for those who survive.
Humans have freewill, Man's future is not set yet, nor predictable:

The Mayan calendar CHANGES (not ends) in 12/2012. The earth and those who are ready will rise to 4th density.
Enjoy...

I don't think the world is going to end in 2012.
It is just the end of one cycle and the beginning of another cycle.
