bear with me. if i travelled from ireland at 12am by plane on a monday and arrrived in los angeles at 1pm sunday (before monday begins) wouldn't that mean "technically" that i travelled back in time, also creating a new timeline between 1pm and 12am?

i love asking these thought provoking questions.

no you just arrived at 1:00 p.m.L.A. time-however it is kind
of association-in terms of the measurement used here to keep track of "time",so its basically how you understand the concept about time travel

The "time travel" we all mean is spacial and dimensional not spacial only. You did not go "back in time" to the point the universe (and Earth in it) was 11 hours in "the past". You traveled along with "the present" which took a fixed amount of hours for the plane to fly and never "time traveled" at all. The 24 hour CLOCK has no meaning in "time travel" because it is always a different "time of day" on different places on the Earth.

If you could do what you are thinking of, you would only be able to prove it by going from the "same place" in Ireland at 12am on Monday to the "same place" in Ireland at 12am on the "previous Sunday". This would prove you really time traveled and you would see evidence like an event you saw already (news report) or locals newspapers dated as Sunday.

If you could do that, you could also go to the "same place" in Ireland at 12am in 2007 BC but it would probably not be a Sunday on our modern calendar or even the same month. You would meet ancient Celts before any Roman influence! You must find a way to travel through time as a dimension or bend "spacetime" so point A (NOW) meets point B (the past).

Bear with me. When it comes to traveling through time we ask the final question. Let us ask the initial ones first. Before traveling through time lets see if we can stop it. How much area will it effect? For how long? How much energy will we need? Still can't visualize? Imagine something like a giant storm over an area...rest will follow.

Michio Kaku (professor of Theoretic physics at New York university) believes time travel will be possible when mankind has advanced to the harness that amount of power.

Dr. Kaku is the author of the book "Hyperspace" and several other books.

Well, if time is absolute, you did not travel back in time, since the time in Ireland will not be 1pm. Though if time is not absolute, you could not say that you traveled back in "time", since there would be no "time".

No. If you used GMT (UTC) as a reference, you would have seen the time pass.. It's all a matter of calibration. If you are in Denver on the ground and jump one foot does that mean you jumped a mile because Denver is at that elevtion ?

The "time" you are speaking of is an artificial construct of man. While it may appear as you have traveled in time, you have only pointed out the illusory perception of an abstract concept.

No. My reason for this is that given the direction that the plane traveled all you really did was fly the opposite direction of the suns revolution and it hadn't gotten that far yet. You beat the sun, not time. : )

No, this is just a time change based upon the Earth's normal rotation---if you were on a space station and this occurred, it might be different---

However, this is a very interesting question!

nope, the time was the same, just the people in LA put a different label on that same time in order to reflect the position of the sun in their part of the sky.
