I am writing on behalf of a seventeen year old living on benefits and EMA. Flat is big and has overnight storage heaters, it is literally baltic, she can only afford £10 per week on her key meter and the storage heaters eat up far too much of her £10.00. If she switched off the storage heaters totally, Would a halogen heater be more economical for her or a calor gas heater (if they are still available) ?Thanks

I use a halogen sometimes for a bit of a heating boost.
As soon as I turn it off though all the heat in the room is gone.
Maybe a little electric fan heater or one of those oil filled heaters would be better. She could just keep it on a low heat to maintain a decent temp and just turn it up for a while when a boost is needed. The oil ones are quite cheap to run.

Absolutely!
Calor gas heaters are the cheapest and best way to go.
Although, there is the saftey element, you have to be on top of the whole 'making sure it's fully switched off' situation.
Most petrol stations still sell calor gas canisters and there as cheap as chips for the life you get out of them.
Most of them will actually do a FREE collection and delivery, just like the milk man.
Obviously, you have to buy the actuall heater first, but, once you have them they pay for themselves in no time.
Anouther alternative are the newer Halogen heaters. They give off more heat, but are slightly more expensive to run.

Every house i've rented has in the contract that you can't store/use gas bottles on the premises. My last place had storage heaters, after a £200 electricity bill for 3 months we gave up, and bought some small oil filled radiators, and heated the bedroom and living room which seemed to do the trick, it was MUCH cheaper (although the kitchen and bathroom were like icy death to use).

Otherwise move to a smaller flat, or get some flatmates to share on bills.

A portable gas heater would heat the room fairly fast with convection and radiant heat. I have a halogen heater and use it as well as my gas fire. They are good heaters(halogen ones) but always switch off at the plug when you go out. My on/off switch became faulty and I messed about and fixed it but as they are so cheap-they are cheaply made.

Get one of the little space heaters. They are inexpensive, you can find them anywhere, and the work really good! We have 2 for our house and the keep the rooms nice and toasty!

Calor gas heaters are better. Wrap her up warm and keep her active.

Cover up all drafts like around windows and doors. I put up a blanket over my window in the bedroom and it keeps me really warm at night.
