700 cases have to be reviewed thanks to this lying toad who successfully pretended to be a forensic scientist for 30 years! How the hell did this ridiculous situation happen? Don't the authorities check credentials of people they hire to help convict criminals?
"A bogus forensic psychologist who supplied evidence in hundreds of court cases over almost 30 years has been convicted on 20 charges. Gene Morrison, 48, who left school with no qualifications, was described in court as a charlatan who had tricked judges, lawyers and police. About 700 cases he worked on will now have to be re-assessed, Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court was told. The court heard he was paid at least £250,000 in taxpayers' money for giving apparently expert advice. Morrison's firm, Criminal and Forensic Investigations Bureau (CFIB), was hired to give evidence in court." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6383307.stm

I liked Catch Me If You Can, it was a great film... but Joe Abignale didn't play a major part in getting 700 convictions over 30 years, whereas this bloke did!

Forgot to add - I know Joe Abignale did go on to become an expert, helping the police in many fraud cases, but this is a very different kettle of fish. We're not talking about financial fraud here.

sal: that's exactly the point I was making in the first place, and yes, I do think it's shocking.

It is shocking that he was able to get away with it for so long, that without training and education in forensics he was able to fool employers, police, courts, etc into thinking that he had the necessary experience.
It's less shocking that he was able to pass himself off as such in that, in the 70s, there were no computer records, no easy method of cross-referencing credentials. Once someone had the necessary paperwork, perhaps fake references, you would be believed to be who you claimed to be, with the credentials you claimed to have.
It's terrible to think of all the cases that are now in doubt.

The entire system of justice in UK needs a major overhaul. I have come to believe that if the Police were left to deal with things as they see fit then things might work out reasonably well. Instead, we have politicians, who obviously know nothing about police work, poking their ores in from the outset and making things difficult.
The entire bloody mess rests squarely on the shoulders of meddling politicians. They are to blame for everything that is wrong with our country. They want to blame us but I am NOT responsible for the CRIME WAVE the SHOOTINGS and all the rest. The politicians are to blame. They act too late and do too little.
Last year five and half million Brits left UK to go and live abroad. Who can blame them. UK is now the crime nation of the world, a joke, a laughing stock. The politicians are entirely to blame.
There's an old saying, "spare the rod and spoil the child," the politicians have done exactly that in UK for the past 25 to 30 years. Because of this our streets are no longer safe. You WILL be shot at by a nutter, sooner or later. You WILL be murdered by an illegal immigrant and/or refugee. The politicians do not give a damn.

The Guildford Four were convicted by faulty evidence of _actual_ police officers, so "professionalism" of investigators is no barrier to a wrongful conviction.
Odds are, if defendants in such cases had had adequate representation, the fraud would have been sniffed out years earlier. This is precisely why there should be mandatory and professional defence for all people accused of any crime.
Aren't you glad you don't have the death penalty in the UK? Who knows how many innocent people would have been executed because of this clown. (There are many known cases in the US of fraudulent evidence being used to convict, including the FBI doing it).

Didn't he get some of these "qualifications" from a web site?-hmm, so THATS why a teacher at my son's school said "oh yes dear parent--without a doubt--computing is THE way to go for our children of the future"!! I mean, in this technological computing age, can we now trust ANYONE in a position of that trust to have proper, bona fide qualifications--lawyers-doctors and the like...or are there still some 'charlatans' still out there with 'credentials' not worth the paper its all written on, all made up by some goon in his shed at the bottom of the garden&making pots of money?-makes you think doesn't it!!

Pray to God continuously on a similar time as attempting, as God enables people who help themselves somewhat than people who're lazy. Lord Krisna stated in Bhagavad Gita, we could carry out our works and resign the fruit of our action. So we could save attempting and discover exhilaration in doing our artwork, whether or no longer we get the wanted effect. we could continually no longer lose desire. Do your superb and flow away something to God,it is going to all come spectacular some day or night.

If you have not seen " Catch Me If You Can" ( based on a true story, starring Leo DiCaprio) This guy passed as an airline pilot, a doctor, a teacher.... it's amazing. It's also an enjoyable movie that does not sensualize the guy in any way.

Don't you think it's a bit more shocking than obviously nobody over 700 cases ever really checked his credentials thoroughly?

It's diabolical that this should have happened, but I bet whoever allowed it to happen and carry on over the years wont be sacked.
Can't blame Morrison for getting away with it but wouldn't he have been better working for Tony Blair?
