I can help you with the planet thing because this is how I learned it
Many (Mercury)
Very (Venus)
Educated(Earth)
Mothers (Mars)
Just (Jupiter)
Served (Saturn)
Us (Uranus)
Nine (Neptune)
Pizza's (Pluto)

As far as the Rainbow
I just found this Cute Sentence

For the planets, what helped me best is "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas"--Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Of course, Pluto isn't really a planet anymore :O You could make the N something a toy or food that starts with N and drop the Pluto if you aren't teaching that.

As for the colors, you could try the same thing, or just use pictures with objects the same color. Red, apple, orange, an orange, yellow, a banana, green, a lime, blue, blueberries, purple, grapes, etc.

I'll echo what the person above me said about the rainbow, Roy G. Biv is red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo, and violet. The planets used to be "My very excellent mother just served us nine pizzas" with the beginning letter of each word being the first letter of each planet in order (mercury venus earth mars jupiter saturn uranus neptune pluto), but now that they are saying Pluto isn't a planet, the last word has to come off, so you may have to make up a new end to make it make sense... (...just saved us nickles?)

Oh, and btw, issues like this designed to recollect something are referred to as 'mnemonics'.
