I have my exercise equipment in my basement but find myself not wanting to use it because my basement smells so "basementy". Not moldy or anything...just stale. Any suggestions? PS- I've had it professionaly cleaned....smelled better for about 2 weeks.

Personally, I dont' think baking soda and those fragrance sprays work that well and definitely not for tough odors. Also, not crazy about sprays with warning statements of eye irritant. I have the perfect solution that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a litle purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just put some of these in your basement. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

These are all good answers, but they cure the symptom and not the cause. All basements have floor drains that have a "p" trap leading to the main sewer pipe, just like that crooked pipe seen under all sinks. These traps are always full of water so sewer gases cannot back-up into the house. There is no issue with sinks because we run water through them almost daily, but the basement floor drain may not see any water for a year or more. Every month, everyone should pour at least 1 quart / liter of water into that drain. Try it and see if there is any difference within a day or two.

Buy an air purifier at Walmart. Put little dishes of cat litter around to absorb odor. You may want to replace carpeting if there is any. Put a vent scent sheet in the furnace. They sell them at Walmart. Frebreeze is good. The apple pie candles work real good, especially the ones you buy from the elementary school kids.

Charcoal will also absorb the moisture without the mess of the litter. Also, vinegar is the best disinfecting agent ever, but if you can't stand the smell, there is a Coalgate Palmolive product named Fabuloso and it is available at Dollar Stores, Wal-Mart-- it is very inexpensive and I use it sitting around in bowls, it is also an excellent cleaner.

I have my bedroom in the basement and what I did was I went to walmart and bought one of the automatic freshners. They let out small amounts every 9-18-36 minutes. My room smells much better.

Where in you basement? If it is just in general, air freshener- like Febreeze works. If it the floor, I would use baking soda. Just sprinkle some on the floor, wait 30 min, and then vacuum up!
