My mom went out and brought back 13 (lucky 13) common goldfish (the ones that are pretty thin, are gold, silver, white, or calico, and can be won at carnivals) in 3 little plastic bags filled with gravel. Naturally, I was outraged. Did she remember the 20+ goldfish massacre of my childhood? But, she had inadvertently killed 2 already. So we kept them. We are gunna' give quite a few away, maybe keeping 5 or 6. I've researcher and found that a 30 gallon tank would be best, but I don't know, since these are a pretty small variety. Any tips for keeping them for a long time? Best tank? Filter? These fish are like 2cm long.

Common goldfish are not a small variety. They are actually quite large and 30 gallons is not even close to big enough for even 1. It will be fine until you can get a new tank, hopefully very soon. A pond would be best, these fish can get up to 2 feet long if they are indeed common goldfish.

You're right 13 is way too many for a 30 gallon tank. They do grow and the max you should keep in there is 3. 10 gallons per goldfish is the rule. I only have 4 in my 55 gallon. Good luck.

Have you even got a cycled tank. If not, all but a few fish will probably die quickly die anyway. You should have 10 gallons per three inches of goldfish as they produce a lot of ammonia and make the water toxic.

Well, it would help to put Ick Away in the tank to "repair" the fishes and can be found at Petsmart. You also need to get a strong filter, but not one strong enough to kill the fishes ( it's best to ask a Petsmart or other consultant for help; they'll tell you everything else you need).

Good luck!

well i do know that u will need 2 gallons of water per inch of fish. so they normally, this is normally get 6 - 12 inches. so 5 - 6 gold fish will need a a 60 - 75 gallon tank. plus they need a filter that is double the normal size for their tank like u need a 1400 - 2000 gph

Just to let you know, I'm using my mom's account, since I've already answered 20 questions today, but I just HAVE to answer you. I would just use the tank anyway, when the fish get bigger, they'll probably be just fine with the tank. I've raised a silver/red goldfish from around 2 centimeters long to around 3 in. long now in a pretty small tank, and it's perfectly fine. Tons of my other fish have died in past years because of some water problem. My advice is to let the water your going to use sit for a few days. I don't really know if I can help you on anything else. Good luck!

the goldfish trauma of your youth is often repeated. ideally 40 litres a goldfish is a good tank for them -- so if your mom wants a lucky goldfish tank make it about 520 litres. there is no such thing as dwarf goldfish as far as i know -- maybe someone should work on it.

When I was a kid I had Goldfish but I never could keep them alive cause they would suffocate each other so a big tank would be the best thing for them. Goldfish put off a certain slime so the need their space.

1 inch of fish per gallon;

if you are keeping 5 or 6, i recommend the Eclipse Aquarium series 6 (6 gallons)
