Left wing political theory in general is flawed. At its heart is complete and total equality of outcome. Thus to the left, it is "morally superior" to have an entire society of poor, hungry people than a society where the majority has some means and is well fed while a minority is poor and hungry. That is why they invent terms like "social justice". That is why they hold up crappy European health care because there "at least everyone is entitled to the same crappy health care". That is why they lionize Cuba where everyone is virtually destitute and demonize America where a small minority are lacking the basics of life. Since a free society won't generally produce equal outcomes for all, they look to government control over individual activity and initiative for correction of these percieved problems.

Both theories are flawed. The conservatives preach about smaller government, but always want to restrict our rights in one way or the other. The Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act of 2006 are good examples. Liberals want to do the same thing. They want to give all the rights to the minority and restrict the majority.

I don't think they want to replace it with tyranny at all.
I, as a liberal, want an equal government for all those ruled by it. so if that means that gays get equal rights, so be it. If that means that the government stays neutral in terms of religion, so be it.
You may view ensuring that all are equally protected under the law as tyranny by the minority, but I just see it as protecting the rights that we all have.

We do not want to create a tyranny out of minorities, we want them to have an equal voice.

I don't think that is liberal theory. But, liberal theory is somewhat flawed, as is conservative theory. That's why we have moderates.
